5 tips for repairing your hair after time in the sun

The British summer was mostly a washout this year, but if you were lucky enough to holiday abroad or spend time in the sunshine that we have recently had, you might be looking for a way to repair and refresh your hair.

The sun’s UV rays are damaging to your hair, causing it to become dry, brittle and prone to breaking. Pair that with sea water which can dehydrate your hair further, strip it of its natural oils and fade the colour, your hair is bound to be left looking dull and lifeless.

We always recommend that you wash or rinse your hair as soon as possible after swimming and use a leave-in conditioner when on holiday to help protect your hair. But if you’re looking for ways to revive your hair now your home, here are five simple and effective ways you can do that:

Use a deep conditioning treatment

Deep conditioning treatments contain ingredients that nourish your hair to reduce frizz and leave your hair looking soft and shiny and should be used once every week or two. We love milk_shake’s Integrity and Moisture Plus ranges which are brilliant for adding moisture back into dry, brittle hair.

Avoid heat styling

We know it’s hard to avoid the hair dryer and straighteners, but even reducing how often you use them will benefit your hair. Why not try wearing your natural hair once or twice a week to start with?

Get a trim

Booking in for a trim with your stylist to remove split ends will help leave your hair looking thicker and healthier. Split ends not only make your hair look thinner, but they also make your hair more easily breakable.

Avoid harsh shampoos

Harsh shampoos which contain sulphates strip the natural oils from your hair and can cause scalps to become dry and flaky. Try opting for a gently cleansing shampoo like milk_shake’s Integrity Shampoo which is sulphate free and contains organic Muru Muru butter to help nourish hair whilst cleansing it.

Use a leave-in conditioner

Leave-in conditioners are another great way to help restore the moisture in your hair. They come in creams or sprays, with creams being better for thick, curly hair and sprays being better for finer hair. We are obsessed with milk_shake’s flower fragrance leave-in conditioner which is vegan friendly and smells amazing. Not only that, but it also protects your hair against further UV damage and helps maintain your colour.
